India first came to me on a postcard, which depicted a hatted snake-charmer luring a snake from its basket on the streets of Bombay. I was near seven and a glamorous aunt, an air hostess who would wield us with tales of her adventures in exotic places while the rest of Ireland was happily trotting off for a week in Wexford every year, had guide the postcard. Since then, India has captivated me. Imagine the feel of shuddery stain under ones feet in temperatures that go 45 degrees. Imagine its reflection on the strip of water supply system that fronts it, or the contrast between white marble and a glorious sunset.
When I see myself at the Taj Mahal, I recollect solitude and a serene silence, not the hoards of snapping, yak tourists, who would of necessity surround me. The vivid colours of India arrest my imagination. Who could not make love the explosions of gold, crimson, fu schia, turquoise, cerise, emerald and ochre ! on womens saris? not to mention the basins of spices, which call for the markets with colours and aromas. India is said to be an violation on the senses.
