India first came to me on a postcard, which depicted a hatted snake-charmer luring a snake from its basket on the streets of Bombay. I was near seven and a glamorous aunt, an air hostess who would wield us with tales of her adventures in exotic places while the rest of Ireland was happily trotting off for a week in Wexford every year, had guide the postcard. Since then, India has captivated me.
